Was speaking with an environmental engineer friend about this very subject. She was saying the problem with solar energy is storage but the real issue with storage is what to do with all the not so good chemicals that are in batteries. :S
Also, the Mr Fusion idea from "Back to the Future" is not far off. They've got some kinda bacteria that can eat garbage and produce biofuel as a side effect.. it's not fusion but still pretty cool.
